In ancient times, a king had a stone
placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would
remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and nobleS came
by and simply walked around it.
Many loudly blamed the king for not
keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out
of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On
approaching the rock, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone
to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally
succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a prize
lying in the road where the rock had been. The prize contained many gold coins
and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who
removed the rock from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never
understand. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's
condition.(Unknown Author)
The transfiguration event happened
after Jesus predicted his coming passion, death and resurrection. Upon knowing
it, the disciples found it very difficult to understand Jesus’ prophecy: “The
Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests
and the teachers of the law. He will be put to death but three days later he
will rise to life.” They got more confused because Jesus told them: “If anyone wants
to come with me, you must forget yourself carry your own cross and follow me.”
Peter’s reaction was so human and
understandable. Who would like to think of suffering and death? Human nature
would always desire comfort, security and well being. People would normally run
from danger and harm, from trials and difficulties. For the disciples this is
an obstacle to their mission. The master will die, so what will happen to us.
This is the point of view of the disciples. They felt fear and was discouraged,
their faith were shaken. They were in crisis. Jesus upon knowing took his
disciples led by peter to the mountain to pray. Jesus did this to deliver the
disciple from a crisis of faith. However, in the mountain he was transfigured before
his disciple. This must be done to
enlighten the mind and hearts of the disciples.
Most of us will also feel this way,
we felt sometimes fear of our own security, fear of our own death. Many had
already lost their hopes in life, feeling that they are worthless. My dear
friends let us look at the disciples who experience the foretaste of the glory
of God through the transfiguration. In the same way, it will also give us hope
that there will be glory in the end day: the glory of God in us. In the midst
of crisis in life, please pray, like the disciples did on the top of the
mountain. Prayer can move the obstacles in our life. The transfiguration of
Christ also challenges us not to be afraid of anything in life. The suggestion
of Peter to build 3 tents may mean a building of the so-called comfort zones.
Certainly Jesus did not agree with Peter because that is not the truth of life.
For Jesus building a tent would mean a withdrawal from the coming pain or a
refusal to accept the cross. The season of lent is also an invitation for us to
break our comfort zones, or our own tents so that we can also grow
psychologically and spiritually.
Today we are challenges to go on
amidst difficulties and obstacles in life. We have hope, the hope of the glory
of God.
Remember,
every obstacle, difficulties, presents a great prize in the Kingdom of God.
